Coal, coconut shell and wood carbons all come off an activation kiln looking like the same black granules — and behave completely differently in service. The base material decides the pore architecture, and the pore architecture decides what the carbon is good at. Here is the honest comparison we give buyers.
Coal: the Tonnage Workhorse
Bituminous coal activates into a balanced micro/mesopore structure with solid hardness (≥90%) at the lowest cost per tonne. It is the default for municipal water filters, wastewater polishing, flue-gas duty and general air treatment. Weakness: higher ash (8–12% unwashed) and a middling ceiling on iodine — premium duties outgrow it.
Coconut Shell: Micropores and Muscle
Coconut char develops an intensely microporous structure — iodine 1000–1200 — inside the hardest granule in the trade (≥97% ball-pan). That combination owns three markets: gold CIL/CIP (attrition = lost gold), drinking water and cartridges (taste/odor molecules are small), and high-end vapor duty. It costs more and its mesopores are limited, so it is a poor decolorizer.
Wood: the Decolorization Specialist
Sawdust-based carbon, usually chemically activated, opens wide mesopores that swallow large color bodies and humic molecules. As 200–325 mesh powder it strips caramel color from sugar syrups, glucose, juices and pharma solutions in minutes. It is soft and almost always used once as powder — hardness is irrelevant, MB value is everything.

- Municipal / industrial water GAC: coal 8×30, iodine 900–1000 — coconut only if the tender demands it.
- Gold adsorption: coconut 6×12, hardness ≥97%, platelets ≤1%. Never compromise here.
- Sugar / food / pharma decolorization: wood powder, MB 150+ mg/g, food-grade certificates.
- VOC and solvent vapor: coal columnar pellets by CTC (60–70%), or honeycomb for low pressure drop.
- Point-of-use cartridges: coconut 12×40 — hardness keeps fines out of the filter.
