Honeycomb activated carbon exists to solve one equation: VOC beds need contact area, but fans hate pressure drop. Straight square channels give the gas a low-resistance path while the walls do the adsorbing — a packed bed’s capacity at a fraction of its resistance. Sizing it correctly is what separates a bed that lasts months from one that breaks through in weeks.
Start with Face Velocity
Design the cabinet cross-section for a face velocity of 0.8–1.2 m/s. Faster and the gas skates through the channels before the walls can adsorb; slower just buys a bigger cabinet than you need. For a 10,000 m³/h stream that means roughly 2.5–3.5 m² of block face — then depth determines service life.
Depth, Grade and Humidity
- Bed depth: 2–4 blocks (200–400 mm) in series covers most paint and printing exhausts; solvent-heavy streams go deeper or step up to pellet beds.
- Grade: specify CTC ≥60% for genuine VOC duty. Bargain blocks with unstated CTC are mostly binder.
- Humidity: above ~70% RH or with water droplets present, use water-resistant binder grades — ordinary blocks soften and slump in humid paint-shop exhaust.
- Pre-filtration: overspray and dust blind the channel mouths first; a cheap filter cotton stage ahead of the blocks multiplies their life.
When to Change the Blocks
Breakthrough, not appearance, is the trigger: blocks look identical full or spent. Track outlet VOC with a PID meter or schedule by adsorbed load — a 100 mm block holds very roughly 15–25% of its weight in mixed solvents before efficiency slides. Spent blocks are regenerable in principle, but at typical block prices most plants simply replace and dispose per local rules.
A Worked Example
A furniture spray line exhausting 15,000 m³/h at ~150 mg/m³ mixed solvent: 4 m² face (1.04 m/s), three 100 mm blocks deep, CTC 60% water-resistant grade ≈ 1.2 m³ of media. At 10 h/day duty that bed carries roughly six to ten weeks between change-outs with a pre-filter — and days without one.
